Windows of Opportunity
The Damon Memorial / Gale Free Library Windows Campaign organized by the Friends of Gale Free Library Praised as “The Gem of Worcester County” on its completion in 1888, the Damon Memorial still sparkles in the town center of Holden, Massachusetts. Also known as Gale Free Library, its dual name honors the original donors: Samuel C. Gale and his wife, Susan Damon Gale.
This grand Romanesque revival building was given a major makeover and a modern addition in 1989. However, the original windows were only maintained at that time, not replaced. They’ve been periodically scraped, reglazed, and repainted. But they’re essentially unchanged from the classic double-hung sashes that let in the light and air on dedication day in August 1888. Now, it’s time to fully restore these beautiful and vital architectural features. “Windows of Opportunity,” a fundraising campaign led by the Friends of Gale Free Library, aims to do just that.
The campaign seeks to raise $200,000 towards the total restoration and repair of the 60 exterior windows in the original building. According to a detailed study by the Boston architectural firm SOCOTEC, the carpentry costs are expected to total $750,000, plus additional project expenses. The Friends campaign will provide a portion of the total costs, with the balance coming from potential grants as well as town appropriations. Following best practices for historic preservation, each window will be removed to a window restoration shop to be fully repaired and restored in a controlled environment. Meanwhile, window frames will be repaired and repainted in place. Plywood or plexi-glass will cover the window openings while the work is underway. Historic wood and glass will be retained wherever possible, and any replacement materials will copy the originals. The goal is to preserve and protect the historic character of a truly unique building.
